In A Chanceable Path, the second part of his autobiography, Donald Kingsmill writes of his life while working in the world of diplomacy. It is not, however, a dry account of professional activities and achievements, though he does make mention of significant people he met and treaties he signed.
Donald tells of adventures, crises and challenges, often droll and even more often unbelievable, during the 37 years when he represented Australia abroad. He shows that the world of diplomacy now rarely offers long dining tables with crisp linen, bright glassware, gold-edged crockery, mountains of fine food and a servant behind each chair to serve the wines. It is a more practical world. It is more down to earth. It can be dangerous.
In a final section he writes of his almost-annual travels in Australia and to other parts of the world, and the unusual and unexpected happenings that all too often befell him or surprised him or amused him on his journeys.
